Rivals criticize methods of war reporting

This article is basically about how cnn gained it access to war zone pictures and it has upset many other domestic companies because they are not able to get the same access CNN has. According to the text, "CNN was the only news network the iraqi government permitted to repot live from baghdad." The clearly gave CNN an atvantage over the other networks because they were able to get footage others just could not get. According to CNN, "it has traditionally said its biggest advantage is the network of foregn affiliates it has built sine it was created in 1980". this to me shows that CNN has created relationship with people who can grant them access to good stories. According to Eason jordan who is the cheif news executive at CNN , CNN plays to win, but we pay by the rules". this to me means that cnn is not doing anything to put their network in trouble.

Crawls march across T.V Territory

The article had to do with the information messages that run across the television screen. These days all of the major networks have this feature as a part of their show to give people important information that they might have missed during the show. According to the text, "There is so much on this story in a given day and not enough screen time for it". This means to me that the news networks use the crawls to cover stories that the the networks may have not had enough time to cover. Many people feel that the crawls are not needed and that they only confuse people and that they just crowed up the already crowed screen. In the text it states that "people question whether this is really making anybody better informed. Many feel that crawl will be a part of television for a long time.

'Crawls' March Across TV Territory

In this article by Paul Farhi it discusses how television news channels information across the bottom of the screen and it causes the viewers to become distracted. They are trying to feed viewers all this information on stories that aren't being covered while they are showing live reports about anthrax for example. The term 'crawl' just means the extra information they are delivering to you on the bottom of the screen on the stories they are not showing you. Almost all of the news networks are using this 'crawl' especially since September 11th, 2001. Rhodes feels that "There's so much on this story in a given day, and not enough screen time for it." There is so much information that the networks have, but do not have enough time to show it all so they feel that having the scrolling headlines is a good idea. The crawl can make the screen crowded because they have all these images scrolling and rotating. Showing news at a faster rate is what is going on now, and whether people like it or not it is the fastest way to give them information. Whether or not they are able to take in all what is given to them, the networks will still cram all the information at one time. Some of the people who are for the crawl are not sure if it is helping people become better-informed. We just aren't meant to take all this information in at one time. They did a test to see how viewers react to the crawl and most people could not stay focused. I know if I am watching something, and something begins to scroll across the bottom of the screen my eyes automatically lose focus on the program and go to the bottom of the screen. It can be annoying at times because you are trying to focus on too many things at once. My eyes are just not able to handle everything going on the screen and my brain is unable to process all of it. You get so fed up with it, that you probably either change the channel, or turn away from the TV until the headlines on the bottom stop so that you can continue to watch the program. By that time though you probably have missed half the news on the top stories.

The Al Jazeera Effect : The Struggle for News in the Arab World

Al Jazeera and other Arab satellite news networks have a big influence on public opinion in the Middle East. It does this in many ways. First, there was no competition between networks and most Middle Eastern people would have to tune into western television shows that didn’t really show the opinions of the Middle East world. Now, with Al Jazeera and other networks not only showing the news of the Middle East, they are competing with each other which make their product better and gives multiple sides of stories. Second, they are trying very hard to capture all the news. Al Jazeera is now using all technology available, using a very large staff to coverage, and having very graphic pictures and controversial topics to keep viewers interested. Also, most world channels that support the United States always report that actions are going well and the Iraqi government will soon fall. Networks that report this are pro-America and there biases clearly show. Many Arabs that live in the Iraqi and Middle East area aren’t pro-American and that’s where Al Jazeera steps in. Al Jazeera which clearly shows their bias with there anti-American reports brings more influence. An Iraqi 39-year old woman says she watches the news nearly all day and she mostly watches Al Jazeera. She says “They don’t lie, we have confidence in them and they have good translators.”

This woman’s opinion is quickly becoming the popular opinion of the Middle East. Al Jazeera says there are not bias at all and report the news of all nations with the same journalistic ideas. Hussien Amin is the chairman of the department of journalism and mass communication at the American University in Cairo and he says “Their impact is now huge”, and continues with “They are affecting Arab public opinion to a degree never reached before.”

Al Jazeera has not only affected the Arab world but it has also affected the attempts of America to influence the Arab world. Al Jazeera has showed all images of the war, especially from the point of view of the Arab world. When Al Jazeera shows the horrible side of war and explains that America invaded Iraq, many Arabs don’t respect the choice. The battle for America has been called an “uphill battle” and it’s not going to plan for America. Showing the mistakes of America and the images of poor Iraqi civilians suffering because of America has countered any remarks from high ranking American officials including Colin Powell. America has only been able to tell the public that the war is going well while Al Jazeera is showing the horrible images of war. "The political damage is very severe," said Shibley Telhami, a University of Maryland professor who studies Arab public opinion. "I think ultimately the U.S. will prevail militarily. But the real issue will be what are the consequences of that victory, and how people in the region perceive the United States after this is all over."

Al Jazeera

The Bush Administration once scorned Al Jazeera for reporting on civilian deaths during the war , for showing images of casualties of these civilians. This is ironic because , how does it look for a country like the U.S. to shun Al Jazeera for reporting objectively and actually showing what is happening in the war ; two characteristics of a democratic press in a non democratic(according to American dogma ) country .
We are suppose to be one of the few nations in which the press should be at liberty to do things like report on civilian deaths , but the opposite occurs. Our media have been severely tainted by jingoism and limitations on objective information. In other words there is a restriction on news that is Anti war. This was hyprocacy .
It is my personal opinion that the Al Jazeera have done a better job in reporting the news than the U.S. Why because their news does not resemble a super imposed graphic designed war movie like ours
In the documentary viewed in class ; I saw more footage of actual war fare and it's casualties in 1 hour than i have seen watching 2 years of the U.S. coverage of the war .
I believe the U.S. does not show footage like this because it would strongly and negatively impact public opinion. If Americans saw their soldiers with their limbs mangled and rotting bodies ,we would push for an end to the war but that of course would not be in the favor of the Bush administration

george creel

creel states that public opinion is not about passion or emotion it is about reason and information to make decision is based on emotion this is a form of propaganda. The CPI organization mass production of information on also serve the interest of media. the CPI realizes that most of the united states were immigrants. the argument was if the immigrants join the war that those immigrants will become citizens.

Bush makes media walk a thin line

once again we see how the government has the supreme upper hand in controlling the media. The media no matter how much leway they have still is controlled by the government in the long run. Bush made the reporters look like sheep and he was their herder so that it appeared that he had some type of power over them and they would realize that. He also had a list in which he knew who to call on so that the questions would be some what regulated. This was an extrememly smart move because when you are trying to gain the respect of the public you really only want certain questions asked and by having this regulated list he knew that only the right questions would be asked. This was another way of regulating the press and it was a brilliant move by bush.

imperialism

william bryan feels that imperalism is not for the united states that the counrty needs to stay isolated form the issues of exapansion. bryan states that " our form of government, our traditions, our present interests and our future welfare, all forbid our entering upon a carrer of conquest. " he feels that american should only be concerned with their issues and not the issues of other nations. america should force on their own issues to be successful as a nation and not involving themselves in european affairs that would lead the counrty to war. bryan states that he believes in the ideology of jefferson with isolating america from european ideology of expansion.

imperialism hostile to liberty

carl schurz states that the imperial states that the united states is unjustifed by the acts of the war itself on the philippines. schurz is comparing the war itself and the handling of the war to the spanish and how they used brutal ways of reducing its enemy. he feels that the government that the philippines has etablished is in their hands that this the choice that they would like to make let that be their discussion not one of the united states that it stands as a conuntry on it own.

emancipators, not masters

william mckinley is stating that it is american 's responsiblity for helping these countries in need. he wants the american public to feel that they have a responsibilty to thesse countries but it would also help the united states with the expansion that would occur with giving a helping hand with these countries. he wants the american people to feel the importance of helping a poverty nation.but he establishes in his work that they are not masters, stating that they are not trying to control these individulas but to help them in the time of need.

patriotic eloquence

albert J. beveridge establidhed his starting argument by conveying the idea that american should be a dependent of other nations. beveridge is showing the american public that it is a super power that it was granted by god for this nation to be dependent for other nations in their time of need. he is pursuing to hit on the emotion and loyalty of the american citizens. he also conveys religion as a form of propaganda giving a moral outlook to show that it is america's duty.

i have mingled freely

letter from the black soldier to the new york age. stated that the condition that the philippine people were facing by the troops from the United States. one example was that a troop cut off the arm of native woman to steal her bracelet. These acts of bruaitly are being etablished where is the justice.

the better part

Booker T. washington wants African Americans to feel this there time to show their importance as american citizens by ecouraging themselves on the matter of the war. Washinton states that the war is positive because it is changing the roles of African American in the american society. to have some form of equaltiy in the army. propagnda ideology is that these solider want to have the same equality as whites so they are encouraged to join the army to survive and protect their nation.

I Saw what was left

This article is establishing the bruital acts that the cubans have endure with the spanish soliders that were destroying the lives of the cuban people. one part of the article went into to detail to establish the horrible conditions that the cubans were facing. " and the ears of all we missing" stating the dead. This image was being established to the citizens of the united states and to stress that the cuban solider needed to be stopped. This form of propagnda of the conditions that the cubans face is going to establish on the emotion of the citizens of the united states.

manfacturing consent

Edward S. herman and Noam Chomsky's manufacturing consent. States that the enquailty of wealth and power is establishes the issues of what is being shown in the news. Herman and Chomsky establsihes " filters" has the organization of the news and how it programs.
The authors are conveying the idea of that the elites are controlling the media. it seems that much of what is being established in the media is what the elites what to be established as news. The question is what happen to having the freedom to establish the everyday issues in the media

propoganda and its influence on a individual
